Visual Thinking Strategies

 My Ideal Dance Studio

  • Similar to the one in the picture
  • A large open space with few windows many mirrors with a hard wood floor, ballet bars, and plenty of space to move around
  • Would be in a suburban area focused on families/young children within the neighborhood
  • Would offer a competitive team as well as traditional classes such as tap, jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip hop, pointe, etc.
  • Would have a multitude of different instructors based on various different levels of teaching abilities and ages
  • Respectful and kind dance instructors to promote a positive/energetic environment
  • I would want to lease the studio
  • Multiple rooms with a high quality sound system

Effects of Cannabis on Creativity

  • Imagining your studio is the creative part
  • It depends on whether cannabis increases creativity
  • 2 modes of thinking in creativity:
    • 1) convergent thinking - loose ideas braided together to find a common thread in order to get a specific outcome (specific framework)
    • Person in room listening to all the ideas and taking them all in; different motifs included in a piece of music; taking in different opinions and ideas and synthesizes into one or small subset of coherent ideas incorporating one or all of the examples they heard in the panel.
    • ex) determining the correct answer on a multiple choice test
    • 2) divergent thinking - brainstorming; exploring ideas and moving into variation of ideas in hopes of eventually converging on an idea
    • ex) Thinking of ways you can motivate dance students

Intelligence and Dance

  • School system designed in a specific way to gear students towards the "expected" career path
  • 3 things about intelligence:
    • It's diverse - we think in many different ways (VAKT model)
    • Intelligence is dynamic - intelligence is interactive
    • Intelligence is distinct
  • Women are able to multitask much easier than men
  • Intelligence is the process of having original ideas that have value
  • School system filters out people who only "move to think" - harder to be a dancer in the school system

SAFE Dance Practice

  • Allowed to be creative in a judgement free zone
  • ex) Tori's example of allowing dancers to eat in the studio so they don't develop eating disorders
LOWE Art Museum
  • It was really fun being able to get to see some really cool art designs at the museum
  • I like how we had to think critically to try to understand and interpret the art with one another
  • It's very important to observe dance art and to be able to create meaning, generate ideas, and refer back to different ideas that it relates to in society
